Deleting Location Codes

The Difficulty with Deleting Location Codes

Deleting location codes poses a special problem because these codes are used in so many areas of the system. Generally, you should not delete location codes if they have been active recently. In addition, some potential problems are impossible to check for, such as the presence of an obsolete location code in the SAVE ITEM field of an item record on reserve or the presence of an obsolete location code in the pickup location of an existing hold.

To delete location codes to your list of library locations, follow the steps below:

  1. Perform and/or request the following deletions:
  2. Delete the location code from all records at your library:
    1. Create Boolean searches (location=<code>) for bibliographic, order, checkin, item, patron, resource, course, program, and section records that contain the location code to be deleted.
    2. Delete the location code from any records listed in the search results.
    3. If your library uses the Link Maintenance feature, use it to ensure that bibliographic and program records (if applicable), and any attached records, have been correctly updated.
  3. Delete the location code from all saved searches and queries:
    1. Review saved searches. If any of the saved searches contain the location code to be deleted, delete the saved search.
    2. Look through the list of saved queries in Statistics. If a query contains the location code to be deleted, modify or delete the query.
  4. Delete the location code from the Branches table.
