Using INN-Reach or Rapido Consortial Borrowing

Innovative offers two different products that allow libraries to share resources with participating institutions regardless of whether they use Sierra or another integrated library system. Your library can participate in either an INN-Reach or a Rapido Consortial Borrowing system, but not both simultaneously.

Using INN-Reach

INN-Reach enables libraries to share data and resources found and maintained on different automated systems. INN-Reach provides the ability to build, maintain, and search a database formed from the records of many libraries. Patrons of the participating libraries can directly request and borrow materials from other participating libraries. All transactions are accomplished automatically, in real time.

Using Rapido Consortial Borrowing

Sierra integrates with the Rapido Consortial Borrowing (Rapido CB) platform allowing libraries to efficiently share resources with other participating institutions. Libraries can process Rapido CB items in Sierra using the same workflows used for INN-Reach items.

Patron Requesting

Rapido CB uses Sierra API endpoints to provide patrons with real-time availability during the requesting process. Patrons are authenticated against Sierra's database using the NISO Circulation Interchange Protocol (NCIP) standard. The process is as follows:

• Rapido CB passes a LookupUser NCIP message requesting patron verification.
• Sierra responds with a LookupUserResponse NCIP message stating whether the patron is successfully authenticated or whether they are blocked from requesting.

Record Contribution

Sierra supports harvesting bibliographic record data using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). This allows your library to contribute bibliographic records and holdings data to Rapido CB's shared holding index.

Unless otherwise noted, the documentation in this section of this manual applies to both Rapido Consortial Borrowing and INN-Reach. For example, sites that use Rapido CB can take advantage of the following functionality:

Note that Rapido CB does not support the following INN-Reach operations:

• Cancelling an INN-Reach hold with no re-request (Rapido CB always tries to find another available item when a lender cancels a request.)
• Recalling an INN-Reach item
• Using Pickup Anywhere
• INN-Reach Patron reports
• INN-Reach Title reports
• Removing Invalid Virtual Items Using the Returned Too Long Report (You can generate the Returned Too Long report, but virtual items cannot be automatically removed.)
