Setting Up ILL Acquisition Methods

ILL can offer the following acquisition methods when you acquire an item to fill an ILL request:

To set up an acquisition method that is currently not available, contact Innovative. Depending on the acquisition method you want to enable, you must provide the following information:

Acquisition Method Information to Provide
BLDSS
  • BLDSS customer code1
  • BLDSS password1
ARTEmail
OCLC ILL Request Transfer
  • OCLC library symbol
  • Request Transfer API key (also referred to as the WSkey) supplied when your library registers for this service with OCLC
RapidILL
  • RapidILL user
  • RapidILL branch
  • RapidILL password

1 This is the same customer code and password used for the ARTEmail document delivery system.

You can provide this information to Innovative by filling out the Interlibrary Loan Worksheets in the Sierra Implementation manual.

If your library has acquired multiple ILL departments, you can specify different values for each department.

BLDSS

Sierra's integration with the British Library Document Supply Service (BLDSS) allows library staff to check against the British Library Remote Supply Collection using the bibliographic data submitted in an ILL request. If your library has enabled this integration, you can use ILL to:

Before you can start using BLDSS, you must go to British Library application management to confirm that the Sierra BLDSS integration has been linked to your account. You can do so by clicking the Created button.

ARTEmail

Automated Request Transmission by Email (ARTEmail) functionality is available to libraries that use the British Library's ARTEmail document delivery system. If your library has acquired the Transmit Electronic ILL Requests – British Library ARTEmail product, you can use ILL to:

When you take these actions, ILL appends a message to the ARTEmail file. ILL sends the messages in the ARTEmail file to ARTEmail when you end the current session or choose Admin | Send ARTEmail Requests.

Innovative can also enable the ARTEmail Direct Document Delivery feature. Using this feature, you can select the method that the ARTEmail supplier uses to deliver the item to the ILL requester. For example, you can request that the supplying institution send nonreturnable ILL items directly to the requesting patron.

Before you can use ARTEmail, ARTTel must assign your library a customer code, password, and library code. For more information, contact ARTTel.

OCLC ILL Request Transfer

This method is available with Sierra 5.5 and later.

The OCLC ILL Request Transfer option transfers ILL requests from Sierra to your WorldShare ILL service. Once the transfer is complete, your library can manage the transferred requests in your OCLC ILL service.

RapidILL

This method is available with Sierra 6.1 and later.

Sierra's integration with RapidILL transmits requests for non-returnable items such as book chapters and articles using the RapidILL acquisition method in Sierra. This method reviews the request for required information and then passes it to RapidILL, which searches its database for matches. Once the request is successfully transmitted, you can finish processing the request from RapidILL's webpages.

Printing and Emailing ILL Requests

The E-MAIL request to another supplier option allows your library to email ILL requests to other libraries. The Print ILL letter option allows your library to print ILL requests to send to other libraries. When you use one of these options, ILL must know the institutional patron record to use for each ILL request.
