Viewing ASRS Message Logs

Sierra and the ASRS machine communicate by exchanging ASRS messages, which the system automatically archives. Depending on the amount of ASRS activity at your library, the system typically retains ASRS messages for 7 days. You can view the ASRS messages that have been generated for an item or patron record. For information on the meaning of ASRS messages, contact HK Systems.

Viewing ASRS Messages for an Item Record

To use the Search/Holds function, you must be assigned permission 101 (View bibliographic records).

Perform the following steps to view the ASRS message log for an item record.

  1. Choose one of the following options from the Function list:
    • Binding
    • Catalog
    • Check In Bound
    • Claim/Cancel Orders
    • Claiming
    • Orders
    • Receive
    • Search/Holds
    • Serials Checkin
    • To Bindery
  2. Retrieve the item record.
  3. Choose the Summary tab.
  4. To limit the display to those items that belong to your location, choose the Current Location option under the All drop-down list.
Scoping Feature

If your library uses scoping, Sierra includes the Current Scope option under the All drop-down list. You can select the Current Scope option to limit the display to those items that belong to the scope assigned to your login. If your library uses scoping but the system does not display the Current Scope option, contact the Help Desk.

  1. In the View drop-down list, choose Holds.
Holds/Bookings Option

If your library uses Materials Booking, the Holds option in the View drop-down list will appear as Holds/Bookings. In the Holds/Bookings view, the system displays the items attached to the bibliographic record and indicates the number of holds and bookings on each item in the Hold Count and Booking Count columns. If your library uses Materials Booking and the Holds/Bookings option still appears as Holds, contact the Help Desk to enable this view.

  1. Select the item for which you want to view the ASRS message log.
  2. Choose the View ASRS Log button. The system searches the ASRS message archive for the item's barcode. When it is done, it displays all of the archived ASRS messages that were generated for that item. For example:
