Optional Course Reserves Functionality
You can have the following features enabled for the Course Reserves product:
- Add Checked-Out Items to Course Reserve Lists
- Add Course Reserve Message
- Attach Bibliographic Records to Course Reserves
- Retain Number of Checkouts from Reserve Circulation
- Suppress Inactive Course Records
Adding Checked-Out Items to Course Reserve Lists
The Add Checked-Out Items to Course Reserve Lists feature enables you to add checked-out items to course records. When the item is checked in, the system displays the course reserve message, prompting you to place the item with other items on course reserve.
Feature Applies to Adding Items Only
The Add Checked-Out Items to Course Reserve Lists feature applies only to adding items to a course record. This feature does not change the functionality of the Attach Bibliographic Records to Course Reserves feature.
To enable the Add Checked-Out Items to Course Reserve Lists feature, contact Innovative.
Adding the Course Reserve Message
When the Add Course Reserve Message feature is enabled, the system adds a course reserve message to an item record under the following conditions:
- The item is available.
- The item is added to active reserve, or its status is changed to "Active".
The system removes the course reserve message from the item record under the following conditions:
- If a course reserve message exists on an item record when the item is checked in, the system displays a dialog box containing the course reserve message. After you check in the item, the system removes the course reserve message from the item record.
- When you update the reserve status of an active reserve item to "Inactive", the system automatically removes the course reserve message from the item record.
To enable the Add Course Reserve Message feature, contact Innovative.
Attaching Bibliographic Records to Course Reserves
The Attach Bibliographic Records to Course Reserves feature enables you to add bibliographic records and all of the attached item records to course records. When the Attach Bibliographic Records to Course Reserves feature is enabled, you can add titles to a course reserve list when:
- the bibliographic record has at least one attached item
- neither the bibliographic record nor any attached items are on hold or checked out
- the bibliographic record itself is on hold but no attached items are on hold
- the Recalls: Course reserves patron type for recalls circulation option is enabled and any attached items are checked out (however, the system does not prompt you to recall the checked-out items)
The system does not enable you to add bibliographic records to course records when:
- any items attached to the bibliographic record are on hold
- any items attached to the bibliographic record are checked out and the Recalls: Course reserves patron type for recalls circulation option is disabled
To enable the Attach Bibliographic Records to Course Reserves feature, contact Innovative.
Retaining the Number of Checkouts from Reserve Circulation
The Retain Number of Checkouts from Reserve Circulation feature enables you to track how many times each item on reserve circulates when the item is on active reserve.
When you add an item to a course reserve list or when you change its status to "Active," the system removes the current value from the TOT CHKOUT field in the item record and places it in the OCHKOUT subfield of the SAVE ITEM field in the item record. The Retain Number of Checkouts from Reserve Circulation determines how the system updates the TOT CHKOUT field when you remove the item from active reserve:
- If this feature is not enabled, the system overwrites the value in the TOT CHKOUT field with the value from the OCHKOUT subfield. Reserve circulations are not tracked as part of the item's total circulation statistics.
- If the feature is enabled, the system adds the value in the OCHKOUT field to the value in the TOT CHKOUT field in the item record, thus retaining a complete count of the item's circulation both as an active reserve item and as an item in general circulation.
To have the Retain Number of Checkouts from Reserve Circulation feature enabled, contact Innovative.
