Adding Checked-out Items to Courses

To add checked-out items to courses, contact Innovative to enable the Add Checked Out Items to Course Reserves feature. To enable staff to recall checked-out items for course reserves, set the Recalls: Course reserves patron type for recalls circulation option to an appropriate P TYPE.

When you select items to add to a course reserve list and one or more of the selected items is checked out, your library's options and features determine how the system responds and whether you can recall the item.

Note that this page describes adding selected checked-out items to a course only. The system does not warn you about checked-out items when adding a bibliographic record to a course reserve list.

How the System Responds When Adding Checked-out Items to Courses

When you add a checked-out item to a course reserve list, the system's response depends on the following options:

If:	The system:
Neither option is enabled	Does not allow you to add the checked-out item to the course reserve list. Displays a message: Item .ixxxxxxx has been checked out. Choose OK to continue. You must check in the item in order to add it to the course.
Adding checked-out items is enabled Recalls are not enabled	Adds a course reserve message to the item. Adds the item to the course reserve list. Updates the item, if you are placing it on active reserve.
Adding checked-out items is not enabled Recalls are enabled	Prompts you to recall the item. Adds a course reserve message to the item. Does not add the item to the course list or update the item. You must add the item to the course again when it is checked in.
Both options are enabled	Prompts you to recall the item. Adds a course reserve message to the item. Adds the item to the course reserve list. Updates the item, if you are placing it on active reserve.

Recalling a Checked-out Item for Course Reserves

When you add a checked-out item that can be recalled to a course, the system prompts you to recall the item:

Recall item .i<xxxxxxxx>?

Choose one of the following options to proceed:

Yes: The system recalls the item.
No: The system does not recall the item but adds it to the course reserve list, if the Add Checked Out Items to Course Reserves feature is enabled.
Cancel: The system does not recall the item or add it to the course reserve list.

If you choose to recall the item, the system:

Calculates the loan rule using the P TYPE in the Recalls: Course reserves patron type for recalls circulation option. The system then uses the loan rule to determine the new due date for the recalled item. For more information, see Recalling an Item.
updates the RECAL DATE and DUE DATE fields in the item record.
queues a recall notice for the patron who has the item checked out.

Note that if the item has already been recalled, the system does not enable you to recall the item for course reserves.
