Importing Usage Statistics Automatically
Electronic resource usage statistics can be automatically imported from resource providers who offer files to web services.
Statistics are automatically imported once a month. You can choose the:
- day of the month that statistics are imported
- date range of the imported statistics
For more information, see:
- How Statistics Are Imported
- How the System Handles Statistics for Titles Present in Multiple Resources

How Statistics Are Imported
The resource provider electronically submits XML data containing titles and statistics. Typically, an automatic download contains statistics for all resources licensed from that provider.
The resource provider must provide the usage statistics data as XML formatted according to the COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of NeTworked Electronic Resources) DTD for the following report types: JR1 (Journal Report 1), DB1 (Database Report 1), BR1 (Book Report 1) and BR2 (Book Report 2).
The system matches titles to the resource by:
- Identifying resource records that contain the resource provider's code in the ACCS PVDR fixed-length field.
- Identifying the resource in the resource ID variable-length fields of those resource records.
- Searching the coverage table for rows containing the resource and title.
- Storing the resource, title, and statistics in a statistics database.
How the System Handles Statistics for Titles Present in Multiple Resources
Resource providers do not separately report statistics for titles that appear in more than one resource. Therefore, a title that appears in more than one resource for a resource provider can be present in the statistics database more than once. However, the reported statistics for each instance of the title is a cumulation of statistics for all instances of the title. For example:
Two resources—Science Database and Humanities Database—are provided by a resource provider named DataProvider. Both contain an online journal titled Psychology Proceedings.
In the Humanities Database, Psychology Proceedings received 100 hits.
In the Science Database, Psychology Proceedings received 200 hits.
DataProvider reports that Psychology Proceedings received 300 hits.
The system stores two lines in the statistics database:
Science Database | Psychology Proceedings | 300 |
Humanities Database | Psychology Proceedings | 300 |

First Import v. Periodic Import Values
The entries you make in the From (# of months back) column of the Autostat file differ for:
- the first import of statistics from a resource provider
- periodic importing from the resource provider after the first import is complete
All other values for entries controlling first and periodic imports are the same.
To automatically import user statistics, follow these steps:
- Verify that contact records exist for each resource provider that offers user statistics.
The contact records must contain a value in the CONTACT CODE field. The contact code values are used to validate the ACCS PVDR fixed-length field of resource records.
- For the resources with available user statistics, verify that the following are properly entered in the resource records and coverage databases:
- ACCS PRVDR field
The system uses this field to locate resource records associated with the resource provider for the statistics.
- related holdings
When the system has located resource records associated with the resource provider, it uses related holdings to link from resource records to titles in the coverage table.
Use Coverage Load and Coverage Edit to add to or change data in the coverage table.
- ACCS PRVDR field
- Choose Admin | Parameters | ERM | ERM AutoStat Configuration. The system displays a dialog for modifying the ERM AutoStat Configuration file.
- Choose Insert or Append to start a new entry in the file.
- Enter data in the columns as follows:
Column Data Access Provider The resource provider code as it appears in the resource record's ACCS PVDR fixed-length field. Customer ID The ID number issued to your library by the resource provider. Ask your resource provider for your customer ID. Consortium Affiliation The affiliation code (used if your library uses ERM as part of a consortium). Leave this blank if your library does not have the consortium version of ERM.
If your library uses the consortium version of ERM, the usage statistics for each library are stored separately. Enter the code for the coverage database that you associated with your ERM login. (See the ERM tab description.) The system matches titles in the specified coverage database to the titles imported for statistics.
Day of Month The day of the month to obtain statistics from the resource provider; for example, if the value entered is '6', the statistics are obtained on the sixth day of every month. Innovative recommends that you contact your content provider to determine which day of the month they provide statistics for the previous month.
Do not enter a number larger than "28" in this field. Numbers larger than "28" will result in no statistics imports during some or all months.
From (# of months back) A number representing where to begin the statistics import. For example, if it is January and this value is '5', the imported statistics data begins with August. - First Import of Statistics from a Resource Provider
- For the first import, Innovative recommends that you contact your resource provider to obtain the number of months for which statistics data are available. Enter that number in this column. For example, if the resource provider makes data from the previous three months available, enter '3' in this column.
- Periodic Importing of Statistics from a Resource Provider
- To import statistics monthly, enter '2' in this column. See also the To (# of months back) column description.
To (# of months back) A number representing where to end the statistics import. For example, if it is January and this value is '3', the imported statistics end with October's data. Innovative recommends that you specify a value of '1' to end the statistics collection at the previous month.
WSDL_URL The Internet address through which the resource provider makes statistics files available. Ask your resource provider for their WSDL_URL. Requestor ID Your library's requesting agent ID. This can be the same as the Customer ID. SUSHI Release The release number used by the resource provider's WSDL server. Ask your resource provider for the SUSHI release used by their server. If you do not enter a release number, Sierra assumes that the resource provider's server uses SUSHI 0.1.
- Choose Save to save your changes.
- Choose Close to exit the configuration dialog.
