Generating Hold Cancellation Notices
When you cancel a hold (from either the Hold tab or the Hold queue), Sierra determines whether to generate a hold cancellation notice and which related prompts display to staff based on the setting of the Holds: Print hold cancel notice when cancelling hold circulation option.
Sierra behaves as follows, depending on the setting of this option:
- If the option is set to "Never", the system cancels the selected hold without generating a hold cancellation notice.
- If the option is set to "Always", the system cancels the selected hold and generates a hold cancellation notice for later printing.
- If this option is set to "Ask", the system prompts you during the cancellation process to specify whether you want to generate a hold cancellation notice:
Notify patron of cancelled hold?
This prompt does not display unless at least one message with a Notice Type of "drop hold" is present in the Text of Circulation Notices table.
In response to this prompt, choose one of the following:
- To cancel the hold and generate a hold cancellation notice for later printing, click Yes.
- To cancel the hold without generating a hold cancellation notice, click No.
- To continue without cancelling the selected hold, click Cancel.
If you choose to generate a hold cancellation notice (that is, if the option is set to either "Always" or "Ask" and you selected Yes above), the system determines the text it includes in the hold cancellation notices as follows:
- If there is a single message with a Notice Type of "drop hold" in the Text of Circulation Notices table, the system includes that message in the hold cancellation notice by default.
- If there is more than one "drop hold" message in the Text of Circulation Notices table, the system prompts you to select a hold cancellation message to be included in the hold cancellation notice. Note that, if you are cancelling multiple holds, the system prompts you only once to select a hold cancellation notice message. The message you select is used for all of the hold cancellation notices you generate.
