Checking Out Checked-out Items at Express Lane Stations

If your library wants to enable patrons to use Express Lane to check out items that are already checked out to a different patron, you can request that the Checkout of Checked-out Items for Express Lane feature be enabled. You can also modify this feature to manage overdue fines and billed items.

INN-Reach and ILL Items

Express Lane does not enable checkout of INN-Reach or ILL items that are already checked out to another patron.

To enable the Checkout of Checked-out Items for Express Lane feature, contact Innovative. If your library uses both Express Lane and the SIP2 Circulation Interface for self-checkout, you might also want to configure Restrict Checkout of Checked-out Items for the SIP2 Circulation Interface.

Processing Checkouts of Checked-out Items

When the Checkout of Checked-out Items for Express Lane feature is enabled and a patron at an Express Lane station attempts to check out an item that is already checked out by another patron, the system first checks circulation parameters, loan rules, and any checkout blocks your library has set up (for example, blocks on checking out items of specific statuses) to ascertain whether the item can be checked out to the patron currently at the Express Lane station.

If the item can be checked out to the current patron, Express Lane:

  1. checks the item in and updates the original borrower's patron record
  2. checks the item out to the patron currently at the Express Lane station

If circulation parameters, loan rules, or checkout blocks prevent the item from being checked out to the current patron, Express Lane:

Express Lane can be set up to:

Overdue Fines

Express Lane can be set up to add any overdue fines accrued on an item to the original borrower's patron record upon checkout by a different patron.

To enable the system to charge overdue fines to the original borrower as part of the Checkout of Checked-out Items feature, contact Innovative.

Billed Items

The setting of the Check-out: What to do with bill of billed item circulation option specifies how the system handles checkout of billed items.

To enable an Express Lane station using the Checkout of Checked-out Items feature to handle items that are checked out to another patron and billed, set the Check-out: What to do with bill of billed item circulation option as follows:

If set to: Express Lane:
"waive" Enables checkout but does not add a charge to the original borrower's patron record.
"reduce" Enables checkout and adds a charge to the original borrower's patron record according to the setting of the Check-in of billed item. Reduce bill to: circulation option.
"ask" Prevents checkout and displays a message directing the patron to a staff member for assistance.
