Checking Out Checked-out Items Using the SIP2 Circulation Interface
When a patron uses a SelfCheck unit to check out an item that is already checked out to another patron, the system responds differently depending on the setting of the Restrict Checkout of Checked-out Items feature. Possible settings for this feature are:
Setting | Action at Checkout |
---|---|
Allow checkout, do not assess fines | The SIP2 Circulation interface allows the checkout. If the checked-out item is overdue, the system does not charge the previous patron any overdue fines for the item. This is the default setting. |
Allow checkout, assess fines | The SIP2 Circulation interface allows the checkout. If the item is overdue, the system calculates any overdue fines and adds them to the previous patron's record. |
Block checkout | The SIP2 Circulation Interface blocks the checkout and directs the patron to the circulation desk. |
Note that other system settings can affect how the SIP2 Circulation Interface behaves upon checkout of a checked-out item:
- If the item is checked out to the current patron, the SIP2 Circulation Interface treats the checkout as a renewal. The Patron can renew own items OPAC option determines whether the renewal is allowed.
- If the item's STATUS is not '-' (AVAILABLE) (for example, if the previous patron has been billed for the item or claimed the item returned), the setting of the Customize Item Statuses Available for Automated Self-Checkout feature determines whether the checkout is allowed.
- If the previous patron was billed for the item, the Check-out: What to do with bill of billed item circulation option determines how the system assesses fines upon checkout. Note that if your library has this circulation option set to "ASK", the previous patron's bill is neither reduced nor waived upon checkout using SelfCheck.
