Printing Title Information

The title data printed on due slips and notices depends on the MARC system and fields your library uses for titles:

MARC 21 System
UNIMARC or Chinese MARC System
Title Data Is Printed from Bibliographic Record

The title printing functionality described on this page applies to due slips and notices that use title information contained in the TITLE variable-length field of the bibliographic record. Therefore, the title printing functionality described on this page does not apply to Statements of Charges, as this type of notice does not use title data from the bibliographic record.

The Data Printed

When using Sierra's title printing functionality for due slips and notices, keep in mind the following:

  • The data that actually appears on a due slip or notice depends on the information that exists in the record.
  • The amount of data that appears on due slips and notices depends on your settings; for example, the width allotted for due slips.
  • Because you can configure your title display to show MARC information different from the title printing functionality described on this page, the data printed might be different from the data you view on the screen.

For more information on titles in the Sierra system, see MARC Records. For more information about titles in the MARC 21 system, see MARC 21 Concise Bibliographic: Title and Title-Related Fields on the Web.

MARC 21 System

If your library is using the MARC 21 system, the system determines the MARC field within the TITLE variable-length field of the bibliographic record to print as follows:

Title Statement Field (245)

When the system uses the Title Statement field (245) for printing, the system prints the following data:

For example, Toys : An Illustrated History. [sound recording] Part I. A - Z.

If No 245 Field Is Present

If a Title Statement field (245) does not exist in the TITLE variable-length field of the bibliographic record, the system prints data from the first field present in the TITLE field as follows:

Uniform Title Field (240)

If the first field present in the TITLE field is the Uniform Title field (240), the system prints the following data:

For example, Toys. [sound recording] Part I. A - Z.

A Field Other Than 245 or 240

If the first field present in the TITLE field is not the Uniform Title field (240), the system prints all the data contained in the first TITLE field.

If the TITLE Field Contains a Link to an 880 Field

The system uses the data from the Alternate Graphic Representation field (880) for printing if the following is true:

Alternate Graphic Representation Field (880)

When using the Alternate Graphic Representation field (880) for printing, the system does the following:

For example, if a Title Statement field (245) contains a Linkage field (6) that points to an Alternate Graphic Representation field (880), the system prints the title, subtitle, medium, part number, and part name (the title elements printed from a Title Statement field) using the data from the Alternate Graphic Representation field (880).

UNIMARC or Chinese MARC System

If your library is using the UNIMARC or Chinese MARC system, the system determines the MARC field within the TITLE variable-length field of the bibliographic record to print as follows:

Title Statement of Responsibility Field (200)

When the system uses the Title Statement of Responsibility field (200) for printing, the system prints the following data:

For example, Toys. [sound recording]. Los Jugetes = Les Jouets : An Illustrated History. Part I, A - Z. Vol. 1.

If No 200 Field Is Present

When the system uses a field other than the Title Statement of Responsibility field (200) for printing, the system prints all data contained in that field.
