Searching the WebPAC With RightResult
RightResult is a WebPAC feature that presents search results based on relevance to the entered search expression. Search results are in up to five groups depending on their closeness to the target.
- Group 1 contains the most relevant results. These are the items whose primary title matches the search expression as a phrase (for example, Good To Great).
- Group 2 contains the next most relevant results, the "Best Bets." Items appear in this group because of where and how the terms appear in the record (for example, Paralegal success : going from good to great in the new century).
- Group 3 contains results that would have been found doing an adjacency search, but deemed less relevant than the first group. (for example, an item titled Coaching, mentoring, and managing that has the phrase "good to great" in the summary).
- Group 4 contains results that would have been found doing a Boolean "AND" search (for example, Ageless : what every woman needs to know to look good and feel great).
- Group 5 contains the remaining results matching the search expression (for example, 100% pure Florida fiction : an anthology that has "great" in the contents and "good" and "to" in the summary).
If no results are found in these groups, the system does a Boolean "OR" search in an attempt to present results. All groups display in order defined by your default Keyword sort order (Title or Date).
The AVS performs OR search, AVS perform adjacency search, and Advanced Searching: Ranking Options WebPAC system options settings affect RightResult behavior. Review these settings on your system if RightResult does not behave as you expect.
Targeted Searches and RightResult
If you perform a targeted search the WebPAC automatically bypasses RightResult to present the results in a single group, sorted by date or title. The following are power searches:
Type of Targeted Search | Example |
a search with field specifiers | t:hairspray, author:johnson |
a search containing quotes | "free bird" |
a search containing "and not" | farming and not agribusiness |
a search containing embedded parentheses | (civil war) and (Oliver Cromwell) |
The WebPAC also considers a search limited to available items as a targeted search.
To search for an exact phrase, enclose the search expression in quotes. If you have not specified a sort order the system sorts search results for an exact phrase search based on the Advanced Searching: Ranking Options OPAC system option.
You can switch between a RightResult view and an ungrouped view, sorted by date or title, using the links provided at the top of the result set. To bypass RightResult entirely, include the database segment name(s) as part of the search expression. See Word (or "Advanced Word") Index for a description of database segments.
Limiting to Available
WebPAC suppresses RightResult relevancy ranking for advanced word search results when users select the Limit to Available function. WebPAC still allows sorting of results by date or title.
For information on WebPac options that affect RightResult, see the descriptions of the ICON_AWS_BYDATE_LINK, ICON_AWS_BYRELEVANCE_LINK, and ICON_AWS_BYTITLE_LINK Web options.
