Renewing Items with Title or Volume Holds
By default, items are blocked from renewal if a hold is placed on the associated title or volume. If the Renew Title Holds feature is enabled, the system gives you the option to override the block on renewing held titles and volumes. The system does not consider frozen holds when blocking items from renewal.
The Renew Title Holds feature does not make it possible to override item-level holds.
To renew an item with a title- or volume-level hold when the Renew Title Holds feature is enabled:
- Renew the item either from the patron record or using the Renew (No Patron) function. The system displays the appropriate message:
Hold Type | Message |
---|---|
Bibliographic record | Title is on hold for another patron. |
Volume record | Volume is on hold for another patron. |
The system prompts you to override the block.
- Select one of the following options:
- To override the block and renew the item, click Override. The system renews the item for the current patron.
- To cancel the renewal:
- Click Do Not Override. The system displays the appropriate message:
Hold Type Message Bibliographic record Item <record number> has a title-level hold for another patron. Volume record Item <record number> has a volume-level hold for another patron. - Click OK. The system does not renew the item; the item remains checked out to the current patron with the previously existing due date.
Allowing Patrons to Renew Items with Title or Volume Holds
Your library can allow patrons to renew items with title or volume holds if both of these features are enabled:
- Renew Title Holds
- Allowing Patrons to Renew Items with Title or Volume Holds
When enabled, the system compares the number of available copies against number of existing title or volume holds. If the number of available copies is equal to or greater than the number of title or volume holds, the system allows the renewal. Otherwise, the renewal is blocked.
Sierra considers only active holds when making this comparison. Frozen holds and holds with a Not Wanted Before value later than the current date are not considered active holds.
Automatic renewal uses the same logic when determining whether an item is eligible for renewal.
