Searching the INN-Reach Catalog

Like catalogs on Local Servers, the INN-Reach Catalog offers patrons a number of methods of searching for records. However, since the INN-Reach Catalog contains the records of all the participating sites, patrons can access a far greater collection of materials. The indexing offered in the INN-Reach catalog encompasses the indexes used on the Local Server and can offer a patron more indexes than any one of the participating libraries would have.

INN-Reach Catalog indexing is based on a set of index rules similar to those for the Local Server. The INN-Reach Catalog is a superset of the indexing on the Local Servers so when a search is passed from the Local Server to the INN-Reach Catalog, the same type of index is found on the INN-Reach Catalog.

Index rules applied to the INN-Reach Catalog consist of both phrase searches and keyword searches. Call numbers from the Local Servers are stored in conjunction with the local holdings and are displayed but not indexed. However, any standard call number fields found in the bibliographic record can be indexed, so patrons may search by the different classification schemes, including LC, Dewey, NLM, or SUDOCS numbers.

INN-Reach enables patrons to pass a search from their Local Server to the INN-Reach Catalog. The search is performed automatically within the same type of index. Following this search, the patron can continue to perform searches on the INN-Reach Catalog.

In addition to the patron searchable indexes, the INN-Reach Catalog indexes the Local Server numbers of all records contributed to the INN-Reach Catalog. This indexing enables the system to quickly find records for updating as transactions are transmitted from the Local Servers. Each entry in the record number index combines a site code for the Local Server and the local record number. For example, dh4oc b1000001 would be an index entry for bibliographic record number b1000001 at site dh4oc. This index is available to staff only.

Patrons can access the INN-Reach Catalog via WebPAC running on the INN-Reach Central Server. In WebPAC, patrons can:
