Comparing Large Print Indicators in Incoming and Existing Bibliographic Records

Innovative can configure your INN-Reach Catalog to distinguish between large-print and non-large-print materials when evaluating incoming and existing records as potential matches. If this evaluation is enabled, records that contain large print indicators can match only with other records that contain large print indicators, and records without large print indicators can match only with records that lack a large print indicator. The system performs this evaluation when matching on both Primary Match Fields and Secondary Match Fields. To change whether or not the system evaluates large print indicators when evaluating potential matches, your Central System Administrator must contact Innovative.

To determine whether a bibliographic record represents a large print book, INN-Reach examines any fields in the potential matches that might contain the phrase "large print". Depending on local cataloging practices, libraries can add this phrase to any of the following fields:

To accommodate some variation in the language used to indicate a large print format, the system considers the presence of the word "large" (that is, the string "large" not immediately preceded or followed by an alphanumeric character) to be an adequate large print indicator. In addition, in order to accommodate variation in capitalization, the system makes the field/subfield data lower case before searching for the "large" string. For example, the system would identify the following fields as containing large print indicators:

t245 |hLarge print.
e250 |aLarge print edition.
e250 |aLarge type.
e250 |aComplete & unabridged, large print.
r300 |a322 pages (large print) ;|c24 cm

To determine whether the print indicators match in incoming and existing records, the system collectively evaluates the MARC 245$h, 250, and 300$a fields/subfields as follows:

  1. Determines whether any of the fields/subfields are present in the incoming record:
    • If any of the fields/subfields are present in the incoming record, the system continues to the next step in this evaluation.
    • If none of the fields/subfields are present in the incoming record, the system stops this evaluation and continues as appropriate:
      • If your INN-Reach System has been configured for additional evaluations (for example, title comparison), the system continues to the next evaluation of the potential matches.
      • If no additional evaluations have been configured for your INN-Reach System, the system identifies the records as a match.
  2. Determines whether any of the fields/subfields are present in the existing record:
    • If any of the fields/subfields are present in the existing record, the system continues to the next step in this evaluation.
    • If none of the fields/subfields are present in the existing record, the system actions are equivalent to those performed in response to a large print indicator match.
  3. Determines whether any of the fields/subfields in the incoming and existing records contain the word "large":

Possible Outcomes of a Large Print Indicators Comparison

Large Print Indicators Match
If the large print indicators in the records match (or are considered equivalent to a match by the system), the system stops the evaluation and proceeds as appropriate:
  • If your INN-Reach System has been configured for additional evaluations (for example, title comparison), the system continues to the next evaluation of the potential matches.
  • If no additional evaluations have been configured for your INN-Reach System, the system identifies the records as a match.
Large Print Indicators Do Not Match
If the large print indicators do not match, the system stops any further evaluation of the potential matches that your INN-Reach System might be configured to perform. It identifies the records as not a match.
