Managing Defunct Holds

Sierra considers a hold defunct under the following conditions:

Type of Hold	Condition
Expired holds	The Not Wanted After date on the hold has passed.
Cancelled holds not yet removed from the holdshelf	The hold is cancelled after the item that satisfies the hold is placed on the holdshelf. Note that cancelled holds appear on the defunct holds summary reports only if your library uses the Multiple Location Holdshelf model.
Unclaimed holds	Items that have been on the holdshelf beyond the Pick Up By date. For more information about how the system calculates this date, see Checking In a Held Item at the Pickup Location.

To manage defunct holds, you can:

• View a report listing the expired holds and/or the cancelled and unclaimed holds.
• Clear the expired holds and/or the cancelled and unclaimed holds on the holdshelf.
