Checking Out Items from the Deposit Collection

With Deposit Collections, you can check items out from a Deposit Collection Library to a member library. The Deposit Collections product enables those items to circulate normally (as if the items belonged to the member library) among member library patrons.

Checking Out Items from the Deposit Collection

To check out items from the Deposit Collection Library to a member library, use the member library's patron record (created during Deposit Collections setup) to perform the same actions you would if you were checking out an item to a patron. See Checking Out Items for more information.

When you check out items from a Deposit Collection Library to a member library, the system checks for the following:

If any of these criteria are not met, the checkout becomes a regular checkout and does not continue the Deposit Collection circulation process. If all criteria are met, the system calculates the due date and creates a temporary item record.

To distinguish this phase of item circulation (at which point the item has a new and temporary item record and temporary circulation rules) from the Deposit Collection Library phase, the item is considered a "temporary" item.

The temporary item can now be sent to the member library.

At the Member Library

At the member library, use the temporary item record to circulate the item among member library patrons as if the temporary item were a regular item owned by the member library.

You can determine whether an item is checked out to a member library or checked in to the Deposit Collection Library by retrieving the Deposit Collection item record. If an item is checked out to a member library, the Deposit Collection item record contains the following:

Field Contents If Item Is Checked Out
DUE DATE a date
BARCODE <temporary item record number>dbl<barcode> (for example: bi1208193dblA40601160855)

Note that if a temporary item is physically at the Deposit Collection Library but was not properly returned, as described in Returning Items to the Deposit Collection, that item will appear to be checked out.

To use the temporary item record to determine whether an item is checked out to a member library from the Deposit Collection Library, see The Temporary Item Record.
