Recalling Titles and Volumes

The Title-level Recalls feature allows libraries to recall a title or volume rather than a specific item. When this feature is enabled, Sierra evaluates whether it should issue a title-level recall whenever a title-level hold is placed, or a volume-level recall whenever a volume-level hold is placed.

Any item attached to the bibliographic record on which a title hold was placed—and any item attached to the volume record on which a volume hold was placed—can satisfy the hold, even if Sierra issues a recall for another item.

To have the Title-level Recalls feature enabled at your library, contact Innovative.

When a title or volume hold is placed, the system:

  1. Determines whether the hold is eligible to initiate a recall:
    • If the hold is eligible to initiate a recall, the system continues to the next step.
    • If the hold is not eligible to initiate a recall, the system stops evaluating the hold and does not attempt a recall.
  2. Identifies the appropriate item to recall based on the following:
    • The item must be attached to the bibliographic or volume record on which the hold was placed.
    • The item must be holdable by the patron.
    • The item's current due date must be earlier than the due dates of the other recallable items.
    The system continues as follows:
    • If the system can identify an appropriate item to recall, the system continues to the next step.
    • If the system cannot identify an appropriate item to recall, the system stops evaluating the hold and does not attempt a recall.
  3. Calculates a new due date for the item. For more information, see Recalling an Item.
  4. Depending on whether a patron or a staff member placed the hold, the recall process continues as follows:
    • If a patron placed the title or volume hold, the next steps in the process depend on whether your library uses automatic patron request processing or manual patron request processing.
    • If library staff placed the title or volume hold, the system displays the item it has chosen to recall and prompts the staff member to accept, modify, or reject the recall. For more information, see Recalling an Item.
    • The system generates recall notices, sends overdue recall notices, and assesses fines for the recalled item the same as for items recalled to fill item-level holds. For more information, see Recalling an Item.
Eligible for Recall

The title or volume hold is eligible if it meets the following criteria:

  • A Not Wanted Before date was not specified in the hold.
  • If the hold was limited to the first item returned at a specific location, there must be a recallable item from that location.
  • One of the following conditions must be true:
    • All items that can be held by the patron are checked out.
    • All of the items that can be held by the patron are already on hold.
    • There are no items that can be held by the patron that are eligible for recall based on the Eligib To Recall loan rule element.
