Displaying Digital Signatures in Patron Records

If your library has acquired the Digital Signature Support product, you can configure the system to save and display signatures in patron records.

Sierra displays the patron’s signature in the expanded patron record display.

You can view signatures when:

If your library has acquired the Patron Images product, the patron signature area displays under the patron photograph area.

To begin using Digital Signature Support, install and configure your signature capture devices. You can then view and capture patron signatures in Sierra. You can also delete a patron's signature if needed.

Installing and Configuring Digital Signature Support

To set up the Digital Signature Support product, do the following:

  1. Acquire a signature capture device to use at each workstation where you want to capture patron signatures. Innovative recommends that your library acquire the Topaz Systems SignatureGem™ LCD 1x5 device, model T-L462. For complete specifications on the SignatureGem LCD 1x5, consult the Topaz Systems Web site at www.topazsystems.com. Innovative provides neither this device nor product support for this device.

If your library wants to use a different signature capture device, you can acquire another model from Topaz Systems. However, if your library does not obtain the exact model recommended, the following installation and configuration instructions may not apply. If you acquire a device other than the SignatureGem LCD 1x5, refer to the manufacturer's instructions for setup information.
Topaz Systems Devices and Macintosh Computers

Signature capture devices from Topaz Systems are not compatible with Macintosh computers.

  1. Contact Innovative to begin the installation. Innovative creates the PAT SIG field to store captured signatures in patron records.
  2. Download and install software from Topaz Systems on the workstations you want to use to capture signatures.
    1. Download the following files from the Topaz Systems website:
      • sigplusbasic.exe
      • sigplusjavaversion.zip (for example, sigplusjava2_52.zip)
    2. Run sigplusbasic.exe on your PC and follow the on-screen installation instructions.
    3. Extract the files from the sigplusjavaversion.zip folder. Your PC creates a new folder.
    4. Perform the following steps, depending upon whether you are installing the software on a 32-bit or a 64-bit operating system:

      32-bit OS64-bit OS
Move the 32-bit SigUsb.dll file from the folder you created into the system folder on your PC (for example, C:\Windows\System32).1. Move the 64-bit SigUsb.dll file from the folder you created into the system folder on your PC (for example, C:\Windows\System32).
       2. Move the 32-bit SigUsb.dll file from the folder you created into the SysWOW64 directory.
    5. Within the folder you created, extract the files from the javacomm.zip folder. Your PC creates a second new folder.
    6. Within the second new folder, find the win32com.dll file and move it into the system folder on your PC.
  3. Install a SignatureGem LCD 1x5 at each workstation you want to use to capture signatures.
  4. For each login you want to view or capture signatures, enable the Show patron signature Patron Display option.

Capturing a Signature

To capture a patron's signature:

  1. Choose Circulation Desk from the Function list.
  2. Retrieve the patron record. The patron signature area is either blank or contains an existing patron signature.
    New Patron Records

If you are capturing a patron signature while creating a new patron record, you must save the record before continuing. The system is not able to save a signature to a patron record that has not been created in the Innovative database.

  3. Choose Tools | Capture Signature. The Capture Signature dialog box displays.
  4. Ask the patron to use the signature capture device to enter a signature. The signature displays both on the signature capture device and in the Capture Signature dialog box.
  5. If you want to save the signature to the patron's record, choose Save Signature. The system stores saved signatures on your server. If you do not want to save the signature, choose Cancel.
Saved Information

The system saves the patron signature and the date and time the signature was captured. The system does not save any other information, such as the reason you are capturing the patron signature.

Deleting a Signature

To delete a patron's signature, follow the steps to capture a patron's signature but do not use the signature capture device to capture a signature. Instead, at the blank Capture Signature dialog box, choose Save Signature. A blank image saves to the signature area of the patron's record.

If a patron's record is deleted, the patron's signature image file is also deleted.
