Using Floating Collections
If your library has acquired the Floating Collections product, you can designate certain categories of items as "floating." A floating item's LOCATION field is updated upon checkin at a non-owning location, limiting the number of items in transit between library branches. For more information, see Checking In Items with Floating Collections Enabled.
Compatibility with Other Features
The Floating Collections product is incompatible with the following features:
- If Sending Items Home is enabled, the system ignores the Float Determiner table settings and sends the item to its owning location.
- If Automated Clearing of In-transit Status is enabled and a non-floating item goes in transit to its owning location, the system cannot properly update the item location. For more information, see Checking In an Item that Does Not Float.
After Innovative installs Floating Collections, your library must complete the following setup steps:
- Set up the Float Determiner table to specify which item categories you want to float among locations. The Float Determiner table specifies whether the system allows a checked-in item to float or prompts you to set the item in transit.
- (Recommended) Add an OWN LOC variable-length field to your item records to keep track of each item's original LOCATION value. The system uses this field to return non-floating items to their original owning location.
To add OWN LOC fields to a group of items from the same location, use Create Lists to identify items with the same LOCATION value and Rapid Update to insert an OWN LOC variable-length field that matches the item LOCATION.
- (Optional) Contact Innovative to enable the Floating Collection Shelf Assignment Feature.
Once you have set up Floating Collections, the system responds differently when you check in floating items at a non-owning location.
