Language Codes Table

To edit the Language Codes table, you must be assigned permission 654 (Edit Language Codes). If you are assigned permission 651 (View System Parameters) but not 654, you can view this table but cannot edit it. See Permissions Used by Sierra for more information.

The Language Codes table provides descriptive names for each of the MARC language codes used in the LANG field in bibliographic records.

Because the system automatically orders entries in the Language Codes table alphabetically by code, the Move tool is unavailable when editing this table.

Functionality Information

When viewing and modifying the Language Codes table, note the following:

Maximum Number of Entries: The Language Codes table can contain a maximum of 800 entries.
Default Country Codes Table Available: You can contact Innovative to request an updated default Language Codes table.

Data Elements

Entries in the Language Codes table contain the following data elements:

Element	Description
Code	The one- to three-character MARC code for the language. You cannot edit this element for an existing entry. You must delete the entry and append or insert a new entry with the corrected code.
Name	A descriptive name of up to 27 characters (Sierra 5.0 and earlier) or 255 characters (Sierra 5.1 and later).
