Viewing Special Field Codes
When you have the appropriate permissions in Cataloging, you can view a list of codes and definitions for variable-length fields used in MARC records for special information based on current MARC standards, such as "Additional Material Characteristics" and "Physical Description".
You can view the special fields used in a specific record when you view or edit that record. See Viewing a Special Field in a MARC Record for more information.
You also can maintain default values for these fields. For more information, see Maintaining Special Field Defaults.
Viewing Special Field Codes
To view the list of special field codes:
- Choose Admin | Parameters | Cataloging and one of the following:
- Special Field Codes
- Special Field Codes (Chinese MARC)
- Special Field Codes (UNIMARC)
- Special Field Codes (Korean MARC)
- To view an expanded view of a special field, select the field and choose View.
- Choose Close when you are finished.
Data Elements
- RECORD TYPE
- The one-character identifier for the record type:
- a—authority
- b—bibliographic
- c—checkin/holdings
- MARC TAG
- The MARC tag for the special field, for example 006, 007, 100, or 154. The LEADER field shows a MARC TAG value of 0. For more information about this field, see Leader Field.
- MAT TYPE
- The appropriate MARC value to describe the type of material, for example Electronic Resource, Motion Picture, or Text.
- POSITION
- The byte number(s) within the special field where the information specified by the MAT TYPE and DEFINITION resides.
- DEFINITION
- The description of the information contained in this portion of the specified special field.
Viewing a Special Field in a MARC Record.
When you view a MARC record, you can view and maintain special fields for that particular record:
- Retrieve a bibliographic, authority, or checkin/holdings record.
- Choose Edit.
- Click the variable-length field and choose Edit | Expand Field.
The field appears in a table format, enabling you to edit the specific elements of the special field. For more information about editing records, see Maintaining Records.
