Choosing your Editing Tools for Customizable Files
Choose tools to edit:
- HTML pages including forms, search help pages, and HTML elements used in the construction of system-generated pages such as toplogo.html or briefcit.html
- images
- stylesheets
- WWWOPTIONS file
Tools for Editing HTML
Do not use text editing tools that automatically alter the contents of files or add characters (e.g., Microsoft Word® adds characters, but Notepad® or SimpleText® do not).
Tools for Editing Images
To edit images that incorporate text—navigation buttons, for example—use an editing tool that lets you maintain a master file with the text in a separate layer from the background. Adobe Photoshop® is an example of such an editor.
Tools for Editing Stylesheets
Edit stylesheets in:
- a simple text editor
- Macromedia Dreamweaver MX®
- a stylesheet editing tool such as Bradbury Software's TopStyle®
Tools for Editing the WWWOPTIONS File
Edit the WWWOPTIONS file in a plain text editor (for example, Notepad®) or using the Web Options function. Other editors, including Dreamweaver MX®, can add characters to the end of each line (which appear as ^M and prevent the file from functioning properly).
