Linking License Records to Additional Resource Records

To link license records to additional resource records, you must be assigned permission 230 (Link additional resource records). See Permissions Used by Sierra for more information.

Use the following steps to link license records to additional resource records.

NOTE

When linking a new license record to a resource record, you must save the license record before linking.

  1. Choose Catalog ERM from the Function list.
  2. Retrieve the resource record.
  3. On the Summary tab, choose License from the View drop down menu.
  4. Select the license record(s) you want to link to an additional resource record.
  5. Choose Edit | Link to additional resource record.

The Select Destination Record window opens.
  6. In the Select Destination Record window, retrieve the resource record to which you want to link the license record(s).
  7. In the Summary tab of the resource record, choose Use Resource. The Select Destination Record window closes, and the system links the license record(s) to the resource record.

If a license record is attached to more than one resource record, the additional resource record number(s) appear immediately beneath the variable-length field area of the license Record tab in a status bar labelled Also linked to record(s):.

You can edit an additional resource record appearing in the status bar by right-clicking its record number and then choosing Update record.

Maximum Record Size and Number of Links

Note that Sierra follows established limits for maximum record size and maximum number of links when you link item records to additional records. The maximum record size is 100,000 bytes (characters) for most hardware platforms. If you will exceed this number by linking records to additional records, Sierra does not link the records and prompts:

Cannot add link: Adding this link will cause this record to exceed the maximum size for records.

The maximum number of license record links is 1000. If you will exceed this number by linking to additional resources, Sierra does not link the records and prompts:

Cannot add link: Adding this link will cause this record to exceed the maximum number of resource links allowed.

See Record Linking and Record and Field Limits for more information.
