Selecting a Record Matching Strategy
Your INN-Reach System can select different strategies for matching bibliographic records contributed to the INN-Reach Catalog. By default, the system tries to match records by their record numbers. Innovative can also configure your INN-Reach Central Server to use the following fields to match records:
To modify your INN-Reach System's matching strategy, ask your Central System Administrator to contact Innovative.
For a description of the record matching process, see Matching Records in the INN-Reach Catalog.
Primary Match Field (Required)
If the system cannot determine a match based on record number, the system uses the Primary Match Field to determine if an incoming bibliographic record matches an existing bibliographic record in the INN-Reach Catalog. You can use either of the following fields as the Primary Match Field:
- MARC 001 Fields
- The system uses Control Number (MARC 001) fields to match incoming and existing bibliographic records. For more information on these fields, see Contributing MARC 001 Fields.
- Matchkey Fields
- The system uses system-generated fields called "matchkeys" to match incoming and existing bibliographic records. For more information on these fields, see Using Matchkeys.
If your INN-Reach System has acquired the "Enhanced Match Service for INN-Reach" product, INN-Reach can be configured to perform additional evaluations to confirm potential matches on Primary Match Field.
Secondary Match Field (Optional)
If the system cannot determine a match based on record number or the Primary Match Field, the system can be configured to use Secondary Match Fields to match incoming and existing records, as described below.
Standard INN-Reach Secondary Match Fields
If your INN-Reach System has acquired the standard Secondary Match Field functionality, the system can use one or both of the following to match incoming and existing records:
- ISBN (MARC 020)
- The system uses subfield $a of the MARC 020 field to match incoming and existing bibliographic records.
- ISSN (MARC 022)
- The system uses subfield $a (and, optionally, subfield $y) of the MARC 022 field to match incoming and existing bibliographic records.
If INN-Reach is configured to use both of these match fields, it evaluates the records using the ISBN fields first. If it cannot identify a match on ISBN, it evaluates the records using the ISSN fields.
Enhanced Match Service for INN-Reach
If your INN-Reach System has acquired the "Enhanced Match Service for INN-Reach" product, you can:
- Specify an expanded list of MARC-tagged fields for use as Secondary Matching Fields. For example, in addition to ISBN and ISSN, INN-Reach can be configured to use the following fields:
- Library of Congress Control Number (MARC 010) field
- Other Standard Identifier (MARC 024)
- Standard Technical Report Number (MARC 027)
- Matchkey field
- Specify the order in which the system uses the Secondary Matching Fields to evaluate records.
- Specify which subfield(s) in the Secondary Match Fields the system examines for match data. For example, the system can examine subfields $a and $z of the MARC 020 fields and evaluate data from both subfields collectively.
- Specify whether, for fields that can repeat according to MARC standards, the system examines only the first instance or all instances of the Secondary Match Field in the records when determining a match.
- Enable additional evaluations to confirm potential matches on Secondary Match Fields.
