Placing a Hold on an Item that Is Not Checked Out

You can place a hold on an item that is not currently checked out to another patron. Note that it is possible to place a hold on an item with any status.

When you place a hold on an item that is not checked out, the system offers the options below:

Page for item
To place the hold and page the item, select this option. The system does the following:
  1. Places the item-level hold. Sierra prompts you to enter information for the item-level hold.
  2. Sends an item paging slip to the print queue at the item's owning location.
If an item-level hold exists for another patron, the system does not prompt you to print a paging slip.
Pageable Items

The system considers an item-level hold pageable if the associated item:

  • Is not checked out.
  • Does not already have other item-level holds.

It is possible to generate a paging slip for an item with any status.

Do NOT page
To place a hold on the item without paging the item, select this option. Sierra prompts you to enter information for the item-level hold.
Place hold and change status to MISSING

This option is only available when the following conditions are met:

  • You are placing a single item-level hold.
  • The item belongs to your location (that is, the item's location is on your Locations Served list).

This option does not appear when placing multiple item-level holds at the same time (even if all of the items belong to your location).

To place the hold and add the item record to the On Search file, select this option. The system does the following:
  1. Changes the item's STATUS field to "m".
  2. Puts the item record in the On Search file.
  3. Places the item-level hold.
Sierra does not display this option if the item's STATUS is already "m".
Cancel
To exit the dialog box without placing the hold, select this option.
