Scanning an ISBN Barcode to Find a Book
Camera Access for Scanning
To scan an ISBN barcode, the app must have permission to access your device's camera. Go to Settings on your device to grant the MyLibrary! app permission to access the camera.
To search for a book by scanning the ISBN barcode:
- Tap Find on the Home screen or tap Scan Book on the Navigation menu.
- Tap Scan Book on the Find screen. The device's camera is activated to scan the book's ISBN barcode.
- Center the scanning area over the ISBN barcode (typically on the back cover). When the barcode is in focus, MyLibrary! automatically searches the library catalog for the title and author of the book and displays the search results. If the title is not found, a message advises you to contact the library for assistance.
Typing the ISBN
You can also search for a non-barcode ISBN by tapping the keyboard icon to type the number. Tap in the Enter ISBN number field and use the numeric keypad to enter the ISBN as it appears on the book, then tap the Search button. You can also tap the microphone icon on the keyboard to speak the ISBN.
Viewing ISBN Search Results
When a search is launched by scanning or typing an ISBN, the Results screen displays the results of a search for the title and author. To filter the results list and view more information about a title:
- Tap one of the format names (Books, eBooks, Audio, or eAudio) above the results list to filter the results by that format type.
- Swipe left on the arrow icon next to each title to see a function link appropriate for the title. For example, you can place a hold or check out an eBook. See Placing a Hold or Checking Out eBooks and eAudiobooks.
- Tap a title to view more information about that title. The Title Description screen appears, displaying additional title information and a list of the copies in the library system. You can use the links at the bottom of the screen to place a hold, check out an eBook or eAudiobook, or read a sample of an OverDrive title, as appropriate.
