Branches Menu

Note that this file has been deprecated in Sierra 3.1 and later releases. See Branches Table for information on configuring branches for display in WebPAC's location limiter.

The Branches Menu file contains the menu lines of the bibliographic LOCATION codes that a WebPAC user can select when limiting a search to items at a particular location (e.g., Where Item is Located). A maximum of 1000 entries can appear in this file. If you do not want patrons to limit to particular locations, omit these LOCATION codes from this file.

Hierarchical Location Codes and the Branches Menu File

In a hierarchical location code scheme, you distinguish between bibliographic record LOCATION codes, which are the "top level" of each hierarchy, and item record LOCATION codes, which are the "lower level" of the hierarchies. Because the Branches Menu file contains bibliographic LOCATION codes only, entries in this file refer to the top levels of each hierarchy only. For more information on location code hierarchies, see Location Codes and Location Hierarchies : Design and Purpose on CSDirect.

Data Elements

Each entry in the Branches Menu file consists of the following elements:

Element Name Description
LOCATION Specifies the 5-character location code. You choose the code from a drop-down menu.
Menu offered Specifies the menu line. You can enter a maximum of 29 characters. See Menu Line Syntax below.

Editing the Branches Menu File

  1. In the Select file drop-down menu of the ASAA function, choose Branches Menu and then Select.
  2. Double-click the location you want to edit, or to add another location, choose the Append or Insert tool.
  3. The Branches Menu file is an internationalized file. If your library has been set up for more than one language, the Edit window includes separate text boxes for input of Menu Text entries for each of these languages.
  4. Enter the menu parameters in the Edit window, and choose OK.
  5. Select the Save tool to save your changes.

The system automatically restarts all WebPAC servers running on your Innovative machine(s) after you save your changes.

Your library's Branches Menu file may have been set up with an ADDITIONAL Locations menu line, which allowed character-based OPAC users to select a location from the Branch Codes file. This entry has "* > ADDITIONAL locations" in the Menu offered element. This entry references obsolete functionality and is safe to remove.

For more information on editing this file, see Editing Entries.

Menu Line Syntax

The Menu offered element consists of only the Menu Text (for example, Main library).
