Spine Label

Use this option to specify the fields to print on the monographic spine label. In addition, this option allows you to specify the format to use when printing the call number on the spine label.

Notes
  • To specify settings for the spine label, set the option Print spine label (in the Label specifications option) to "YES".
  • It is possible to have a separate monographic label file for each account unit. Please contact Innovative to set this up.

When you select this option, Sierra offers the following choices:

Spine Label

1 > Fields to print on label.........................................cB
2 > Format for call numbers.................LETTERS & NUMBERS / DECIMAL
3 > Print the period preceding the Cutter number.....................NO

___________________________________________________________________________
  Key a number or
R > RETURN to Database maintenance menu
  Choose one (1-3,R)

1 > Fields to print on label

When you select Fields to print on label, Sierra displays the list of fields currently specified to print on the label. Fields print in the order in which they appear in the list. When printed, each begins on a new line. Each field occupies one line, except for the call number (see Format for call numbers). The system prints only as many fields as will fit on the label.

Fields to print on Monograph spine label:

1> CALL # from ITEM record (if found), else CALL # from BIBLIOGRAPHIC record
2> Location (branch) name, spelled out

Width of Label: 8 characters (lines wider than this will wrap)
    Height of Label: 7 lines
NOTE: For call numbers, a new line is always started at a space or
      subfield delimiter

 Key a number or
 D > DELETE a field I > INSERT a field R > RETURN to previous menu
 Choose one (1-2,D,I,R)

D > DELETE a field

When you select this option, Sierra asks you to specify the line number of the field that you want to remove from the list. You must confirm the deletion before it is done.

I > INSERT a field

This option enables you to specify the fields to print on the label and the order in which they should print. The order in which fields print is determined by the position of the field in the list of fields to print. When you select INSERT a field , Sierra asks you to specify the line number at which the field should be inserted (the existing field will be pushed down to the next position, it will not be overwritten):

Insert field at which position in list? (1-3) _

To insert a field at the end of the list, select the highest number offered (e.g., '3' in the above example). When you enter the line number, Sierra provides a list from which you can select the field to print:

Fields to print on Monograph spine label:

SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING LABEL FIELDS:

1 > Variable length field tag from the BIBLIOGRAPHIC record
2 > Variable length field tag from the ITEM record
3 > Variable length field tag from the ITEM record (if found); else field tag
      from the BIBLIOGRAPHIC record
4 > Copy number field in the ITEM record preceded by "c.".
5 > Location (branch) as five character code
6 > Location (branch) name spelled out
7 > The library name
8 > FIRST title field in bib record, regardless of marc tag

___________________________________________________________________________
  Key a number or
R > RETURN to previous menu
  Choose one (1-8,R)

Enter a number to select a field to print on the label. Choose RETURN to previous menu (or press Escape) if you decide not to select a field.

The first three options allow you to specify a variable-length field from a particular record type to print. When you select one of these options, Sierra asks you to enter a single-character Innovative field group tag from the selected record type to identify the field you want to use (e.g., 'c' for call number):

Input new BIBLIOGRAPHIC tag: _

If you enter a character that is not a field group tag for the specified type of record, Sierra does not accept the character. The three options are discussed below.

New Lines

When call numbers are printed, the format is determined by your selection for

2 > Format for call numbers

However, Sierra always starts a new line at a subfield delimiter and at a space embedded in the call number. For instance, when the call number "HG2128|b.A951 1985" is printed, the date and Cutter number will be on their own lines (in all call number format options), as in:

HG2128
.A951
1985

1 > Variable length field tag from the BIBLIOGRAPHIC record

Specify an Innovative field group tag for a variable-length field from the bibliographic record, e.g., 't' for title. If the field does not exist in a particular record, the system skips that field and prints the next field.

Title Field

When t is entered, the system prints the first MARC 245 field in the record. To print the first t field in the record (without regard to MARC tag), select the option:

8 > FIRST title field in bib record, regardless of marc tag

2 > Variable length field tag from the ITEM record

Specify an Innovative field group tag for a variable-length field from the item record, e.g., 'c' for call number. If the field does not exist in a particular record, the system skips that field and prints the next field.

3 > Variable length field tag from the ITEM record (if found); else field tag from the BIBLIOGRAPHIC record

Specify an Innovative field group tag for a variable-length field from the item record, e.g., 'c' for call number. In this case, if the field does not exist in a particular Item record, the system looks in the bibliographic record for a field with the same field group tag and prints it, if found. Otherwise, it skips the field and prints the next field.

Only select this option for a field such as the call number, where the field group tag has the same meaning in both record types.

4 > Copy number field in the ITEM record preceded by "c."

For example, "c.2" The data is taken from the COPY # field in the item record. The copy number does not print for copy '1'

5 > Location (branch) as five character code

The LOCATION field from the item record (up to five characters), e.g., "wref".

6 > Location (branch) name spelled out

The location name spelled out as specified in the BRANCH (location) codes file, e.g., "West Reference"

7 > The library name

The library name, e.g., "State Library"

8 > FIRST title field in bib record, regardless of marc tag

The first occurrence of a 't' field in the record (based on the order in which the fields are physically stored in the record).

2 > Format for call numbers

Select this option to specify, for monographic spine labels, which parts of the call number should begin on a new line.

Notes
  • If you do not include the call number in the list of fields to print on the spine label, this option does not appear. Sierra displays "N/A" (not applicable).
  • For a particular title, if the number of characters to be printed on a single line (based on the call number format you have selected) is greater than the width of the spine label, the data wraps to the next line. (See the discussion of setting the width of the spine label).

When you select this option, Sierra offers the following choices:

Spine Label

Format for call numbers
Current Value: LETTERS & NUMBERS / DECIMAL

1 > NO FORMAT SPECIFIED: Formatting determined solely by "Breakmode
                            for call number" setting
2 > ALL ON ONE LINE: Class letters, numbers and decimal all print on
                        one line
3 > LETTERS & NUMBERS / DECIMAL: Class letters & numbers print on one
line. Decimal prints on next line
4 > LETTERS / NUMBERS & DECIMAL: Class letters print on one line
Numbers & decimal print on the next line
5 > LETTERS / NUMBERS / DECIMAL: Class letters, numbers, and decimal
each print on a separate line
6 > BREAK ON SPACES ONLY: Forces break on spaces; no other effect

7 > RETURN to previous menu

Choose one: (1-7) _

The call number "QA76.6|b.B5725 1985" used in the following discussion to illustrates how Sierra prints the call number for each of these choices. The option, Print the period preceding the Cutter number, which controls whether the period prints, is set to "NO" for the following examples.

When printing call numbers, Sierra always begins a new line at subfield delimiters and at spaces.

1 > NO FORMAT SPECIFIED

Formatting is controlled by the Breakmode for call number setting. The period before the Cutter number always prints. Example (Breakmode for call number is set to "BREAK ON ALL"):

QA76
.6
.B5725
1985

2 > ALL ON ONE LINE

Class letters, numbers, and the decimal all print on one line. Example:

QA76.6
1985

3 > LETTERS & NUMBERS / DECIMAL

Class letters and numbers print on one line. The decimal prints on the next line. Example:

QA76
.6
B5725
1985

4 > LETTERS / NUMBERS & DECIMAL

Class letters print on one line. Numbers and the decimal print on the next line. Example:

QA
76.6
B5725
1985

5 > LETTERS / NUMBERS / DECIMAL

Class letters, numbers, and the decimal each print on separate lines. Example:

QA
76
.6
B5725
1985

6 > BREAK ON SPACES ONLY

The call number breaks on subfield delimiters and spaces. The period before the Cutter number always prints. Example:

QA76.6
.B5725
1985

This option enables the library to customize the printing of call numbers by inserting spaces into the call number where a break is desired. For example, the local call number "CA1 LA51 76B35" prints as:

CA1
LA51
76B35

3 > Print the period preceding the Cutter number

Select this option to specify whether Sierra should print the period before the Cutter number. This option applies only to choices 2 through 5 above.

Conditional Offering

If you do not include the call number in the list of fields to print or, if you include it, but select either the "NO FORMAT SPECIFIED" or "BREAK ON SPACES ONLY" call number format, the option to specify whether to print the period preceding the Cutter number does not appear. Sierra displays "N/A" (not applicable) for this option.
