About MARC to BIBFRAME conversion

Vega uses the BIBFRAME standard for all data mappings and display. As a Vega Discover library, your collections will be imported as MARC and converted to BIBFRAME. It's important that your library staff understands how your current MARC metadata will be converted and what to expect in regard to how your bibliographic records will behave under the new classifications as instance records that roll up into works in Vega.

The following MARC to BIBFRAME conversion guidelines will help you understand how MARC leader and other fixed field metadata values in your MARC records will cause Vega to classify those records as different types of instances. This is important to understand so that you can troubleshoot any records that don't display as you expect on your Vega Discover site. You can also use the information to perform data cleanup before you move to Vega.

Notes:

  • Records are processed from MARC to BIBFRAME according to tag number, so if the instance type is set by the LDR during processing, it could be overwritten based on a later tag (such as data from the 006 or 008).
  • Instance type is a required field, with a default value of "print." A record's instance type is set to "print" if the record does not meet any of the requirements described below to assign a different instance type.
  • Any type that is not electronic is considered physical.
