Configuring Non-Innovative Programs for WebPAC Maintenance
The editing tools that you use for customizing WebPAC files must be configured to avoid indenting. Tokens, for example, must be the only element on a line—spaces and tabs are not allowed.
The FTP programs you use to transfer WebPAC files, and the editing tools with FTP functionality, must be configured to use the staging and liveftp logins.
Configuring Editing Tools for HTML Editing
To configure sophisticated HMTL editors (such as Allaire HomeSite®, Adobe GoLive®, and Macromedia Dreamweaver MX®):
- Turn off automatic code rewriting (many versions of Microsoft FrontPage® rewrite code).
- Turn off indenting.
Tokens
Some features in the WebPAC, such as the Advanced Search option, are implemented by adding reserved tokens to HTML pages.
WebPAC tokens are enclosed within HTML comments (e.g., <!--{TOKEN}-->). To ensure that the Web server does not confuse tokens with text in other HTML comments, tokens are surrounded by curly braces (e.g., <!--{msg}--> or <!--{search}-->).
Tokens must always be the first and only item on a line, with no other tokens, codes, spaces, or TAB characters preceding or following them.
Indentation to delineate code structure is not allowed.
Configuring FTP and Editing Tools to Access the Staging and Live Directories
Access Requirements
To allow FTP access to your system, verify:
- The IIIFTP entry in the Limit Network Access table has access.
- Port 1021 is open in your institutional firewall.
You can use your favorite FTP program, or the FTP functionality incorporated in some popular editing tools, such as Macromedia Dreamweaver MX® or Adobe GoLive®, to transfer files between the staging/screens and live/screens directories on the Web server.
Use the liveftp and staging logins to access the live and staging directories, respectively.
Configure the FTP or editing tool with the following information:
Program prompts for: | Enter: |
Name of site | name of the Web server directory, e.g., staging or live |
Local root folder | name of the local (work) directory, e.g., local_staging or local_live |
Host address | The server hostname or IP address |
User name or login | staging or liveftp |
Password | your password for the login |
FTP connection port | 1021 |
login type or FTP type | This may be "passive" or "normal" FTP. |
In Macromedia Dreamweaver MX®:
- It is not necessary to set up a default images folder or list the http address.
- Do not list a host directory.
- Do not turn on automatic uploading or Check In/Out.
