Moving (re-ordering) Variable-length Fields

When you edit a record, you can change the order of variable-length fields with the same tag. By default, Sierra keeps groups of tagged fields in a certain order. (See note, below.) In the following example, you can re-order the 650 fields and 100 fields:

  001 172642
  008 711117s1966 maua b 00000 eng camI
  090 HC 54 .M43 1966
  100 1 0 Meier, Richard L
  100 1 0 Johnson, A. H.|q(Allison Heartz),|d1910-
245 1 0 Science and economic development: new patterns of living
  250 2d ed
  260 0 Cambridge,|bM. I. T. Press, Massachusetts Institute of Technology|c[1966]
  300 xxi, 273 p.|billus.|c24 cm
  504 Includes bibliography and index
  650 0 Economic history|y20th century
  650 0 Technology|xHistory
  650 0 Natural resources

To move a variable-length field:

  1. Right-click on the field.
  2. Choose one of the following options from the popup menu:

Move up

Moves the field before the previous field. If the current field is the first variable-length field, this option is disabled.

Move down

Moves the field after the next field. If the current field is the last variable-length field, this option is disabled.

Move to top of group

Moves the field to the top of the group. If the current field is already the first field in its group or the only field of its kind, this option is disabled.

Move to bottom of group

Moves the field to the bottom of the group. If the current field is already the last field in its group or the only field of its kind, this option is disabled.

NOTE

The Move up and Move down options enable you to reorder fields, but when you save the record, the system saves the variable-length tags in a certain order:

  • All variable-length fields are saved by MARC tag group. For example, all 1xx fields are saved together and precede all 2xx fields, which are saved together and precede all 3xx fields, and so on.
  • Multiple fields in the 0xx, 1xx, and 2xx MARC tag groups are saved in numerical order within the group. For example, the multiple fields in the 2xx MARC tag group in the record shown above are saved as: 245, 250, 260.
  • Multiple fields in the 3xx, 4xx, 5xx, 6xx, 7xx, 8xx, and 9xx MARC tag groups can be saved out of order, within the MARC tag group. For example, multiple fields in the 8xx MARC tag group could be saved as: 810, 830, 800, 852.
  • If you move a field to a position in a different MARC tag group, the system saves the field in its own MARC tag group. For example, in the sample fields above, you could use the Move down function to move one of the 100 fields to appear after the 260 field. Upon saving the record, however, the system moves that 100 field so it appears as the last 100 field. Likewise, if you move the 100 field so it appears before the 001 field, the system saves the 100 field as the first field in the 100 group.

A record can have multiple call number fields and the WebPAC always displays the first such 'c' tagged field in the record as the call number. To enable the storage of call number fields in non-numerical order, set the Call number fields: allow storage in non-numerical order option to "YES".
