Specifying Leader, 006, 007, and 008 Field Search Criteria for MARC21 Bibliographic Records

To specify a MARC21 bibliographic record leader or 006, 007, or 008 subfield as a search criterion:

1. Select Bibliographic from the Store Record Type drop-down list.
2. Select Bibliographic as the record Type to search.
3. Double click the Field cell and select a field from the MARC21 Leader, MARC21 006, MARC21 007, or MARC21 008 tabs

or

Select the Field cell, enter the '@' character, and then select a field from the drop-down menu. Subfield mappings to '@' numbers appear in the tables on this page.

The MARC21 Bibliographic 006 Field

A bibliographic record leader's Rec Type subfield (char pos 6) specifies the type of material cataloged in the record as shown below:

Within the 006 field, character positions 00 through 17 have different meanings, depending on the record type. Note, however, that many '@' numbers map to the same character position within the range 00 through 17. For example, BOOKS, E RESOURCES, MAPS, SERIALS, and VISUAL MAT all define position 11 as Govt Pub. MUSIC defines this same character position as Acc Mat5. This means that some fields can be specified with any of these equivalent '@' numbers with identical results. For example, the following three search criteria produce the same results:

Within the 008 field, character positions 00 through 17 and 35 through 39 are identical for all record types. The only exception is character position 06, which is defined as @ 261 through @ 265, depending on the REC Type code. Character positions 18 through 34 have different meanings, depending on the record type.
