Using Address Fields in Searches

In Sierra, Address field data is not stored in the database as a single string. Instead, the various components of an address are partitioned into separate database elements. You must know how the system stores Address field data in order to construct a search.

How Sierra Stores Address Fields

The components of an Address field are stored separately in the database, partitioned into the following elements:

Field Name ID - Record Type Description
Address Addr1 80004 - patron
67001 - holdings
79101 - order
84001 - contact
86002 - vendor
The first line of the address.
Address Addr2 80005 - patron
67002 - holdings
79102 - order
84002 - contact
86003 - vendor
The second line of the address.
Address Addr3 80006 - patron
67003 - holdings
79103 - order
84003 - contact
86004 - vendor
The third line of the address.
Address Village 80007 - patron
67004 - holdings
79104 - order
84004 - contact
86005 - vendor
The village (used only at UK sites).
Address City 80008 - patron
67005 - holdings
79105 - order
84005 - contact
86006 - vendor
The city.
Address Region 80009 - patron
67006 - holdings
79106 - order
84006 - contact
86007 - vendor
The region (e.g., US State or Canadian Province).
Address Postal Code 80010 - patron
67007 - holdings
79107 - order
84007 - contact
86008 - vendor
The postal code.
Address Country 80011 - patron
67008 - holdings

In holdings and order records, the address Field Names begin with "Vendor", such as Vendor Address Addr1.

When an Address field is inserted into a record, the system parses the Address data according to rules based on your local customs and stores the Address components in the appropriate database elements. Some examples are:

Address Fields in Create Lists

For most record types, a query for Address field data requires selection of the specific Address element(s) to search. For example, given the following Address field in a vendor record:

Coyote Press 1711 Congress Street Suite 23 Taos, NM 87571

a search for VENDOR City equals "taos" will return this record. A search for "taos" in any other address element will not return this record.

For patron records only, the Address1 and Address2 fields are offered for searching. These are "virtual" fields composed of all Address field elements. When searching for patron address data using the Address1 or Address2 fields, the system looks in all elements for a match. For example, given the following patron address in the Address1 field:

2314 Ruggles Road Apartment 3C Spokane, WA 99207

a search for PATRON Address1 has "spokane" or PATRON Address1 has "99207" will return this record.
