New Records: Always check for duplication for record types
Use this option to configure Sierra to perform automatic duplicate checking on specified fields for new Bibliographic, Patron, and/or Item records. When you select this option, Sierra prompts:
New Records: Force duplicate checking.
Current Settings: NONE
New Records: Always check for duplication for record types:
___
To enable automatic duplicate checking, enter 'b' for bibliographic records, 'i' for Item records, and/or 'p' for patron records. (The order does not matter.) Alternatively, press Enter to specify that Sierra not perform automatic duplicate checking for new records.
Record Type Options
- For bibliographic records, Sierra performs duplicate checking on the field(s) you specify in Database Maintenance option New Bib Record: Duplicate check on fields.
- For Item records, Sierra performs duplicate checking on the field(s) you specify in Database Maintenance option New Item Record: Duplicate check on fields.
- For Patron records, Sierra performs duplicate checking on the field(s) you specify in Circulation option New PATRON Record: Duplicate checking on fields.
For example, suppose a library sets the option New Bib Record: Duplicate checking on fields to one or more field labels (e.g., 'b' for the barcode and/or 's' for the Social Security Number) but leaves the option New Records: Always check for duplication for record types set to "NONE". In this case, whenever staff start a session to create new bibliographic records, Sierra prompts:
Check for duplication? (y/n)
However, the library could set New Records: Always check for duplication for record types to 'b' to specify that Sierra automatically perform the duplicate checking rather than prompting whether to check for duplication at the start of the session.
