Leader for Bibliographic Record

The Leader is a fixed field that comprises the first 24 character positions (00-23) of each bibliographic record and provides information for processing the record.

The Leader dialog box displays when you double-click on the LDR tag in a bibliographic record. Click downarrow.gif to display a list of valid characters for the different Leader positions.

Select from the following options to complete the bibliographic record’s leader:

Record status - Indicates the relation of the record to a file.

Type of record - Indicates the characteristics of and defines the components of the record.

Bibliographic level - Indicates the bibliographic level of the record.

Type of control - Indicates the type of control, archival or no specific type.

Character coding scheme - Identifies the character coding scheme used in the record, MARC - 8 or UCS/Unicode

Encoding level - Indicates the fullness of the bibliographic information and/or content designation of the MARC record.

Descriptive cataloging form - Indicates the descriptive cataloging form character reflected in the record. Subfield $e (Description conventions) of field 040 (Cataloging Source) may contain additional information on the cataloging conventions used.

Multipart resource record level - Indicates the record level to which a resource pertains and any record dependencies. This information will facilitate processing the record in different situations. For example, the record may describe a set of items, or it may describe a part of a set. The part may only have a dependent title to be used for identification purposes thus requiring use of additional information to understand its context.
